Eily Norah Riordan was born at Lyttleton on the 15 April, 1895, the eldest of four – two sisters and a brother. Her parents were Thomas and Mary Riordan (nee Long). Barbara was born in Rotorua the daughter of James and Myrtle Martin. The family moved to the Bay of Plenty where Barbara received her education and quickly entered into the local life of the environment. Helping on the farm, Barbara inherited a great love of animals which she retained throughout life...
Martha Forbes was born at Ensfield, Oamaru, on 19 April, 1885. Martha entered the Sisters of Compassion on 8 December, 1907.
