June Catherine the third daughter of the late Thomas and lris Ryder was born in Palmerston North. She grew up on the family property in Tokomaru with her other siblings.
Bridget Cecilia Flannery was the eldest daughter of John and Ellen Flannery, and was born at Timaru on 12 October, 1913. Two of her sisters also entered the Sisters of Compassion: Sister Mary Joan and Sister Mary Adrian.
