Elizabeth Welsh was born in Invercargill on 3 February, 1885. Her parents were Michael and Margaret Welsh. She entered the Sisters of Compassion on 1 March, 1926, and on 8 September, 1926, Elizabeth began her novitiate training receiving her Religious name Sister M. Etienne. Sister M. Sister Victor Chang

Maria Teresa Bui was born in Kubulau, Bua, Fiji, on 10 October, 1937. Teresa, as she was called, was the daughter of Fong Chang Lee, a Buddhist and follower of Taoism who came from Chungsan Province in southern China, and Teresia Ralongaqato, a strong Catholic, from Natokalau village, in Kubulau, Bua.
