Mary Small was born at Tuamarina, on 4 March, 1876. Her parents were Joseph and Debora (nee Hunter).
Bridget Cecilia Flannery was the eldest daughter of John and Ellen Flannery, and was born at Timaru on 12 October, 1913. Two of her sisters also entered the Sisters of Compassion: Sister Mary Joan and Sister Mary Adrian.
Stella Mary Walsh was born in Invercargill, the fourth daughter of James Raymond Walsh and Stella Walsh. Her father was a Custom Officer who had worked in various places throughout New Zealand.
