Elizabeth Welsh was born in Invercargill on 3 February, 1885. Her parents were Michael and Margaret Welsh. Sister Rita Hickey

Rita was born in Opunake, the third daughter of a family of six, three sisters and two brothers. Her parents were John Sydney and Bridget Hickey (nee Coyle). They were a close knit family and very much part of the Opunake community.
