This was the last Ceremony at which Mother Mary Joseph Aubert was present, seated in a chair in the sanctuary to receive the new Postulant. Sister Etienne made her First Profession on 8 September, 1928.  As she had been trained and worked as a very good teacher before becoming a Sister of Compassion, she was given sole charge of the Pius X Home School in June, 1929.

In May 1937, Sister was transferred to the Home at Silverstream, and in 1939 was appointed the Local Procurator there. She remained in this office until November 1942, when she returned to the Mother House at Island Bay.

In September 1942, Sister Etienne was due for her Silver Jubilee, but on account of a series of events, celebrations did not take place until October. The Jubilee was confined to the

Community, but Sister Etienne was permitted to visit her relatives during the ensuing days.  Later she spent a week at Carterton and was able to visit her relatives at Masterton.

On 10 November, 1953, at a few minutes to 11 in the evening, Sister Etienne called Sister Luke, the Infirmarian, saying she felt a sharp heart attack. Sr. Luke sent her to bed at once, and the priest and doctor were called.  She was anointed and the doctor arrived in time to see her die 15 minutes later.  Sister knew she was going to die and had asked for a priest to be with her. Sister Etienne was a woman of faith and prayer.
