Christina entered the Sisters of Compassion at Island Bay on 9 April, 1931, and at Reception was given her Religious name Sister Mary Alphonsus Ligouri. Sister was Professed on 15 September, 1934.

Sister Liguori completed her General Nursing in 1937. Sister served the sick, the aged and the handicapped for many years in our Homes at Whanganui and Silverstream. At Silverstream, she also cared, as a nurse, for the students of St Patrick’s College. She also spent many years at St Vincent’s Home of Compassion, Auckland, where she cared for the babies.

In later life, Sister was Sacristan at the Home in Island Bay. She was dedicated to duty, and was forthright and highly organised with a dry sense of humour.

All during her life, Sister Liguori battled ill health, as she had curvature of the spine. During 1984, she had a fall and was admitted to St Anne’s where she died very quietly three years later.

Father Bonish SM celebrated Sister’s Requiem Mass and said in his homily:

You know in terms of worldly achievement not many of us do great things, certainly not many of us Religious. But in Religious like Sister Ligouri her works are made great by the spirit in which they were done, by the love from which they were done. Add to this that all her life she battled and overcame ill health, and we appreciate more what she did with her life in the framework of her religious vows.
