In 2017 she wrote: “Each year begins with the annual hikoi to Auckland to visit the Carmelite and Tyburn Sisters. This hikoi was started by the late Father Jim Durning SM 50 years ago. Father David Gledhill now leads the hikoi. Each year the numbers increase as the people from Rotorua have joined the Wairoa people”. Sister Carmel is part of a volunteer group that runs the flea market on Saturdays; the proceeds go to the Parish and also to help people in need. Besides doing pastoral work Sister gives Reiki treatment when requested. During Cyclone Gabrielle, Sister Carmel was safe and suffered with many others the loss of power, phone connection, and lack of water. She offered accommodation to a number of families at the time in the weeks that followed.
Sister Carmel is our Sister Veronica Paul’s sister.
