Kathleen Elizabeth Desmond, the only daughter of Harold and Elizabeth Desmond, was born in Wellington where she and her three brothers, Fred, Joe and Phil, spent their childhood...
Rita was born in Opunake, the third daughter of a family of six, three sisters and two brothers. Her parents were John Sydney and Bridget Hickey (nee Coyle). They were a close knit family and very much part of the Opunake community.
It is a miracle that I am here today against all odds given the fact that many doctors told me and the Sisters that I wouldn’t live for long.
