Stella Mary Walsh was born in Invercargill, the fourth daughter of James Raymond Walsh and Stella Walsh. Her father was a Custom Officer who had worked in various places throughout New Zealand. Theresa Eileen Birchall was born in Wanganui on 16 July, 1918. Her twin brother Robert lived only three weeks. Eileen as she was called, was the twelfth child in the family, and the last surviving aunt of her numerous nieces and nephews of whom she was very fond.
