Before entering the Sisters of Compassion in 1967 Sister Rae completed her nursing training at the Sisters of Mercy Mater Hospital in Auckland.
Mary Elizabeth Lavery was born on 1 September 1904, at Waubra, Victoria. Her parents were Bernard and Catherine Lavery (nee Fay). Australian born and proud of it, Ballarat had a special place in her heart.
