Constance Miriam Mary Chard was born at Stratford in Taranaki, on 7 May 1912. Her father, Edward Chard, was born in England and came to New Zealand at a very early age, marrying her mother Amy Carter who was of Irish descent.
Barbara was born in Rotorua the daughter of James and Myrtle Martin. The family moved to the Bay of Plenty where Barbara received her education and quickly entered into the local life of the environment. Helping on the farm, Barbara inherited a great love of animals which she retained throughout life...
