Constance Miriam Mary Chard was born at Stratford in Taranaki, on 7 May 1912. Her father, Edward Chard, was born in England and came to New Zealand at a very early age, marrying her mother Amy Carter who was of Irish descent.
Mary was born in Wellington daughter of Thomas and Ellen Dolan.
