Thelma Backhurst was born in Auckland, 6 May 1940. Her parents were George and Gladys Backhurst. John her brother was the only other member of the family. Sister Baptist, her father’s sister, was a Sister of Compassion.
The Sisters pledge to serve the marginalised and those society ignores with a real hands-on approach drew me to volunteer...
Sister Josefa wrote in 2017… I left home in 1964, and after 50 years as a Sister of Compassion, I can only acknowledge and thank God for my humble beginning.
