Clare Mary Brownlie was born on 19 October, 1892, at Brunswick, Whanganui, the daughter of James Brownlie and Nora (Nee Mullins). Her father’s two sisters were among Mother Aubert’s first companions.
Mary Jane was born in Greytown, Wairarapa, the only daughter of William and Jane Donovan. Her parents owned a large and productive farm in Rangitumau, in eastern Wairarapa.
