Sister Cecilia Scanlon

Island Bay’s Own ‘Flying Nun’: It started as a joke but before she knew it, Sister Cecilia, celebrating her 80 birthday, was flying down The Parade in Island Bay on the back of her neighbour’s Harley Davidson motorbike.
Sister Alacoque Walsh

Mary Florence was born on 25 April, 1904, at Momona, Taiera. Her parents were Patrick Walsh and Mary Anne Walsh (nee Casey). While Mary was still a baby, her father moved to a farm at Edendale where she was brought up. Mary entered the Sisters of Compassion on 13 August, 1930, and was given the religious name of Sister Mary Alacoque...
Sister Loyola Galvin

Sister Loyola Galvin (Johanna Mary Frances) was born on 12 May 1922, the second daughter of Adairine and Edward Galvin. In the family of two girls, her elder sister was called Von. The family owned a small farm in Hawera where her father raised poultry and owned many animals. Mr. Galvin was a French polisher by trade. Mrs. Galvin owned a drapery store and worked until she was 70 years old. On leaving school Johanna trained as a nurse at Wellington Hospital during World War II and graduated three years later achieving triple honours.
