Stella Mary Walsh was born in Invercargill, the fourth daughter of James Raymond Walsh and Stella Walsh. Her father was a Custom Officer who had worked in various places throughout New Zealand. Martha Forbes was born at Ensfield, Oamaru, on 19 April, 1885. Martha entered the Sisters of Compassion on 8 December, 1907.
Ellen Mary’s parents were Michael and Johanna Roughan. The family of four children, one brother Edward and two sisters Winifred and Johanna, lived on a small life-style block of land in Miller’s Flat, Central Otago.
