Catherine Margaret Mary Carmine (Kati) was born in Westport in 1890. Kati was the eldest child of Luigi Carmine and Catherine Carmine [nee Concannon.
Margaret Hartnett was the younger sister of Catherine, and was born at Kanieri on the West Coast. She went to the Hokitika Convent School where she would have listened with rapt attention to Mother Mary Joseph Aubert speaking of the Maori Mission at Hiruhārama on the Whanganui River.
