Barbara was born in Rotorua the daughter of James and Myrtle Martin. The family moved to the Bay of Plenty where Barbara received her education and quickly entered into the local life of the environment. Agnes was born in Wellington, daughter of Julian and Agnes Allen. They met whilst on route to New Zealand where they married and settled successfully into their adopted country.
Ellen Mary’s parents were Michael and Johanna Roughan. The family of four children, one brother Edward and two sisters Winifred and Johanna, lived on a small life-style block of land in Miller’s Flat, Central Otago.
