Irene Mary Barker was born on 16 September, 1910, in Auckland. Her parents were James and Mary Barker (nee Slade). Mr Barker was a boot maker. There were four girls and one boy in this closely knit family.
Mary Jane Walker was born in Wellington on the 28 May, 1879. Her parents were Alexander and Mary Walker [nee Knox]. Mary entered the Sisters of Compassion at St. Joseph's Home, Buckle Street, on the 15 August, 1903...
