Elizabeth Josephine McComisky was born in Patea, Taranaki, on 28 January, 1894. Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of John and Anne McComisky.

Rita was born in Opunake, the third daughter of a family of six, three sisters and two brothers. Her parents were John Sydney and Bridget Hickey (nee Coyle). They were a close knit family and very much part of the Opunake community.
