Charlotte Hinnegan was born at Stillwater, Westland on the 29 December, 1875. Her parents were John and Margaret Hinnegan (nee Scott).
Mary Josephine Casey was born in Wellington on 11 October 1873. Her parents were John James and Teresa Mary Casey (nee Pagon). Mary had wanted to join the Sisters of Compassion at Jerusalem-Hiruhārama for some time, but could not get away from home.
Before entering the Sisters of Compassion in 1967 Sister Rae completed her nursing training at the Sisters of Mercy Mater Hospital in Auckland.
