Heritage New Zealand is seeking submissions on the proposal report to support the inclusion of the Chapel of Our Lady of Compassion and the Resting Place of Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert to the Heritage New Zealand List as a Category 1 historic place.
Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga’‘s heritage assessment advisor, Natalie Marshall, highlighted that the Chapel has outstanding historical and spiritual significance due to its direct association with Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert. It also emphasised its aesthetic and architectural qualities, which evoke feelings of awe and tranquillity.
“The result is a unique and extraordinary space, which, with the addition of the resting place, has significant rarity value” said Marshall.
Heritage New Zealand is accepting submissions on this proposal, seeking to capture the experiences, significance, and personal connections people have with this place
Submissions can be made until Friday 24 February 2025 at 4 pm.
