Rita was born in Opunake, the third daughter of a family of six, three sisters and two brothers. Her parents were John Sydney and Bridget Hickey (nee Coyle). They were a close knit family and very much part of the Opunake community.
Clare Mary Brownlie was born on 19 October, 1892, at Brunswick, Whanganui, the daughter of James Brownlie and Nora (Nee Mullins). Her father’s two sisters were among Mother Aubert’s first companions.
Many stories are remembered about the giftedness of Sister Sheila’s talents and her joy in sharing them with others and encouraging others to learn from her.
