Louisa Gertrude was born in Albury, N.S.W. Her parents, Charles and Catherine, raised their eight children, five daughters and three sons, within a strong Christian atmosphere.
Eileen McDonald was born in Auckland on the 26 January, 1904, the second daughter of James and Rose McDonald. Eileen was baptised and confirmed at St Patricks Cathedral, Auckland.
