Sister had trained as a nurse and was well known in Waimate as a dedicated nurse. She played the organ and loved gardening. During an influenza epidemic in the 1960’s, Sister nursed the sisters with skill and love. After some discernment she decided Religious Life was not for her.

Sister Thelma Backhurst
Thelma Backhurst was born in Auckland, 6 May 1940. Her parents were George and Gladys Backhurst. John her brother was the only other member of the family. Sister Baptist, her father’s sister, was a Sister of Compassion.
