Eily Norah Riordan was born at Lyttleton on the 15 April, 1895, the eldest of four – two sisters and a brother. Her parents were Thomas and Mary Riordan (nee Long). Thelma Backhurst was born in Auckland, 6 May 1940. Her parents were George and Gladys Backhurst. John her brother was the only other member of the family. Sister Baptist, her father’s sister, was a Sister of Compassion.
