Hanna McNamara was born at Guhard, County Kerry, Ireland, on 25 February 1874. Her parents were Cornelius and Ellen McNamara (nee Dwyer).
Mary was born in Fairlie, the youngest of 6 children. She was educated at the local school and completed her secondary education with the Sisters of Mercy at Timaru.
During her nearly 50 years as a professed religious, Sister offered love and compassion to all those whom she encountered. She was also grateful for the love, understanding and compassion that she received from others.
