The Influenza Pandemic 1918 – A temporary exhibition

November 11, 2018 @ 10:00 am - March 31, 2019 @ 3:00 pm

Free

The Sisters of Compassion mark the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic.

The story of the Sisters of Compassion during the influenza pandemic will be told in a temporary exhibition opening at the Home of Compassion.  The pandemic came at the end of a devastating war and struck Wellington between November and December. Wellington had the highest death rate of the cities.

As city officials mobilised, the Sisters of Compassion responded to the call for volunteers, nursing the sick in Island Bay, Berhampore and at the temporary hospital at St Patrick’s College.

The exhibition is open until 31st March 2019 at Our Lady’s Home of Compassion, 2 Rhine Street (off Murray Street), Island Bay, Tue-Sat 10am-3pm; Sun 12noon-3pm. Contact heritagecentre@compassion.org.nz or (04) 282 1953 for more information.

Please note: Some date exclusions apply due to facility bookings, these include:
