Alice Brett was born in Wellington on 5 June, 1871. Her parents were George and Mary Brett (nee Maher). Alice entered the Sisters of Compassion at Buckle Street and on 28 November, 1904, received her Religious name Sister Mary Vianney.
Thelma Backhurst was born in Auckland, 6 May 1940. Her parents were George and Gladys Backhurst. John her brother was the only other member of the family. Sister Baptist, her father’s sister, was a Sister of Compassion.
