Thelma Backhurst was born in Auckland, 6 May 1940. Her parents were George and Gladys Backhurst. John her brother was the only other member of the family. Sister Baptist, her father’s sister, was a Sister of Compassion.
Margaret Hartnett was the younger sister of Catherine, and was born at Kanieri on the West Coast. She went to the Hokitika Convent School where she would have listened with rapt attention to Mother Mary Joseph Aubert speaking of the Maori Mission at Hiruhārama on the Whanganui River.
Sister Felix (Ellen Catherine) Breen was born in the Tapanui Hospital, about twenty miles from the family farm in Conical Hills, Central Otago. Ellen’s parents were Mary and Jim Breen and she was the second eldest of nine children, five sisters and three brothers...
