Barbara was born in Rotorua the daughter of James and Myrtle Martin. The family moved to the Bay of Plenty where Barbara received her education and quickly entered into the local life of the environment. Mary Cooney Walsh was born in Gore. Her parents were Annie Marie Cooney and John Joseph Walsh. Mary was the only girl in the family of four. The family lived on their own farm at Menzies Ferry.
