Emily Keziah McLoughlin was born at Lismore, New South Wales, on 19 July, 1899. Before entering the Sisters of Compassion, she worked as a secretary for nearly twenty years in the office of an importing firm of musical instruments.
Patricia Margaret Peace Crombie was born on 6 November, 1918, and was baptised a week later in St Mary of the Angels Church, Wellington. Patricia’s parents were Norman Joseph and Hilda Crombie (nee Hopkins).
