Margaret Magdalen Shortall was born at Turakina on 7 December 1881. Margaret was of Irish and Scandinavian heritage.
Emily Keziah McLoughlin was born at Lismore, New South Wales, on 19 July, 1899. Before entering the Sisters of Compassion, she worked as a secretary for nearly twenty years in the office of an importing firm of musical instruments.
