Rita was born in Opunake, the third daughter of a family of six, three sisters and two brothers. Her parents were John Sydney and Bridget Hickey (nee Coyle). They were a close knit family and very much part of the Opunake community.
Christina Agnes Dowdall was born in Whanganui on 9 November, 1908. Her parents were Christopher and Gladys Dowdall. Christina was lovingly referred to in the family as Jacky.
Margaret Teresa O’Meara was born at Totara Flat, West Coast of the South Island, on 15 November, 1885. Her parents were Michael and Catherine O’Meara (nee Kennedy).
