During her nearly 50 years as a professed religious, Sister offered love and compassion to all those whom she encountered. She was also grateful for the love, understanding and compassion that she received from others.
Barbara was born in Rotorua the daughter of James and Myrtle Martin. The family moved to the Bay of Plenty where Barbara received her education and quickly entered into the local life of the environment. Ilene May Hunter was born at Pahiatua on the 28 November, 1902. Her parents were George and Mary Hunter (nee Horgan). Ilene entered the Sisters of Compassion, Island Bay, on 26 March, 1932, and received her religious name, Sister Benigna at her reception. Sister was professed on 23 January, 1935...
