The Organisation:
The Sisters of Compassion, founded by Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert in 1892, are New Zealand’s first home-grown Catholic order. With a rich legacy of compassion, they continue their mission through care, education, and hospitality from their base at the Home of Compassion in Island Bay, Wellington.

The Role:
As Archivist-Historian, you’ll be a key guardian of the Congregation’s heritage, ensuring that the stories, taonga, and faith traditions of the Sisters are preserved and made accessible for future generations. You’ll support internal and external stakeholders with research and exhibition development while aligning with the mission and values of the Sisters of Compassion.

This role is part time – 16 hours/week.

Responsibilities:

  • Preserve and catalogue archival materials, both physical and digital
  • Manage environmental and storage conditions for optimal preservation
  • Assist in maintaining and curating the Heritage Centre exhibitions
  • Respond to research requests and support historical initiatives
  • Collaborate on public engagement through exhibitions and storytelling
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legal and ethical standards
  • Uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles in all work activities

Requirements:

  • Proven experience in archives, heritage, or museum settings
  • Strong understanding of New Zealand’s material culture and Catholic history
  • Familiarity with archival software (Past Perfect or similar)
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Cultural competence in Te Ao Māori and commitment to Tikanga Māori
  • A background in history or oral history is advantageous
