One in Our Midst is the latest book by Father James B Lyons, priest in residence at the Island Bay Home of Compassion. It explores 18 titles given to Mary the mother of Jesus in the 16th century Litany of Loreto, relating them to modern Christian life.

Launched in February at the Compassion Chapel in Island Bay, Archbishop of Wellington, Paul Martin SM, presented the book, highlighting its contemporary relevance.

Over 60 guests attended the event, which began with a karanga by Kaihautū Māori Maru Karatea-Goddard, setting a tone of reverence. Reflections were shared by Kevin Plant, a friend of Father James, and Sister Sue Cosgrove. Father James thanked the Home of Compassion staff and WelCom editor Annette Scullion for her support. The evening ended with guests singing Pilgrims of Hope, by Father James and Chris Skinner, marking the 2025 Jubilee Year.

The book is available at www.compassion.org.nz and Our Lady’s Home of Compassion shop for $25, with all sales supporting the Sisters of Compassion’s mission.
