Three students have been honoured with the Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert Tertiary Scholarship to support their studies in 2025. The award is a one-off grant of $3,000 offered to second-year students, or students in above years who are not eligible for ‘Fees free’ government support for their Tertiary Studies in 2025. The Sisters express their gratitude to the Mother Aubert Home of Compassion Trust Board for making this award possible. The Sisters of Compassion extend their congratulations to the following students on their successful applications.

 Rose Powell

Rose Powell is a student at Victoria University of Wellington, and in 2025, she will be studying for a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in History and Religious Studies.

“I am a true Wellingtonian, born and raised in the windy city. I am a proud old girl of St Mary’s College and Holy Cross School Miramar. I am a member of the Wellington South Parish. I am privileged to be one of the recipients of the Suzanne Aubert 2025 Tertiary Scholarship.”

“For me, teaching is contributing to the future of Aotearoa New Zealand. Receiving this scholarship will help ease the financial burden of university fees. While the financial element of the scholarship is greatly appreciated, the support of the Sisters of Compassion is of significance. Knowing that they see me as worthy of carrying on the legacy of Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert makes me feel empowered that I can achieve my goal of becoming a teacher and giving back to my community.”

Giovanni Noaro

Giovanni Noaro is a student of Bachelor of Aviation (Air Transport Pilot) at Massey University, completing his second year in 2025.

“I intend to build a career in aviation, as it is a field that has always fascinated me. My Catholic faith has helped me to believe in myself and my vision to one day become a pilot and be part of an Air Ambulance Team in New Zealand. Providing emergency medical services to people throughout the country will incorporate my love of flying with my desire to help people. Giving back to my country and those in need is vital to me.”

“Receiving the Suzanne Aubert Tertiary Scholarship is truly significant, and I feel extremely blessed to be selected. Being awarded the scholarship also motivates me even more to excel in my studies, knowing the Suzanne Aubert Scholarship Committee has invested in me.”

Katharina (Katie) Bestall

Katie Bestall is a student at the Western Institute of Technology in New Plymouth, and in 2025, she will be completing her final year of a Bachelor of Nursing.

I am excited to see what else the nursing career will provide for me as this journey has already been incredibly rewarding. Looking to the future, I aspire to contribute meaningfully to Aotearoa New Zealand’s healthcare system by addressing health inequities and improving access to quality care.”

“This scholarship will help alleviate the financial pressures of study and placements, enabling me to dedicate myself fully to my education and the communities I work in. With a commitment to promoting equity and compassion, I hope to play a role in fostering healthier outcomes for individuals and whānau across Aotearoa. I am thankful for the opportunity of this scholarship and thankful that it aids me in working closer to my goal of becoming a nurse.”
