Terry has been a longtime supporter of the Sisters of Compassion and now he has chosen to leave a gift in his will, also known as a bequest, to support the ongoing work of Compassion. His connection started over 25 years ago when he volunteered at the Compassion Soup Kitchen, then on Tasman Street, inspired by the sisters who were running the kitchen at the time.
“I remember Sister Felix, who was small in stature with a powerful presence. If there was any trouble with the guests, she would stand by the table, and it would stop.”
“She told me to always remember when serving a plate of food to a guest, you are giving it to Christ. She was an incredible sister and loved by many people,” he recalled.
Terry’s memory takes him back to the time when he was curious about why a single shoe had been placed next to the statue of Saint Joseph. He asked Sister Felix, who shared the story behind the gesture. She explained that when the Sisters were low in food or clothing, they would turn to Saint Joseph for help by placing a symbolic item in front of his statue. At that time, it was shoes they needed. And as always, something would turn up.
Terry often reflects on a passage in the Bible, Matthew 25:35-45, that he believes describes the work of the Sisters of Compassion and is the reason behind his ongoing support and his planned bequest: “For I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in.”
Terry is proud to have arranged to leave a gift in his Will. When asked what motivated him to leave a bequest, Terry responded “I want to make sure the vision of Suzanne Aubert is kept alive.”
