Earlier this year, Deacon Danny Karatea-Goddard stepped down as Tumu Whakarae Co-Chief Executive of the Sisters of Compassion Group, a position he held since May 2022.
His farewell in April brought together Sisters of Compassion, Trustees, Directors, supporters, volunteers and staff from the Home of Compassion, Hiruhārama, Compassion Soup Kitchen, and Compassion Housing. Danny expressed gratitude for their support, especially during recent health challenges.
Reflecting on his deep connection with the Sisters, Danny shared “I’ve been working alongside the Sisters of Compassion for over two and a half years, but my history with them goes back to childhood. The Sisters have always been there for me and my family.”
“Things are unfolding in a certain way, but it is all according to God’s will, and I want to give thanks to God for that,” said Danny.
Rebecca Packer, Tumu Whakarae Co-Chief Executive of the Sisters of Compassion Group, acknowledged Danny’s contributions, and said it had been a privilege to work alongside him. She spoke of his role in helping strengthen the connection that Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert established with Māori across the motu, including at Hiruhārama (Jerusalem) in the 1880s.
“You, Danny, are so generous with your time, your energy, your heart, and your expertise. Your wisdom and support have meant so much to me, and it has truly been a privilege to work with you,” she said.
Sister Margaret Anne Mills, Congregational Leader thanked Danny for his service: “May the blessing of Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert surround you”.
The ceremony also farewelled Maru Karatea-Goddard, Kaihautū Māori, who will move north with Danny, and Donna McMahon, Acting Group Operations Manager.
