Joan entered the Sisters of Compassion, 14 March 1946, and later received the name Helena.
Following her Religious Profession on 15th September 1948, Sister Helena completed her nursing and maternity training, and afterward applied her nursing skills to surgical nursing for a period of time in our hospital. Sister then beautifully cared for the aged and disadvantaged in the Homes of Compassion at Island Bay, Silverstream, Timaru and Whanganui. From 1978 till 1984 she worked in our Homes in Wagga Wagga and Broken Hill.
Sister Helena’s holistic approach to the people she cared for and their extended family has benefited many people. Over the years she supported many families in practical ways where she gave her time and talents.
Sister led a full life. Right up until February this year, she was actively involved with pastoral visiting and taking Holy Communion to a number of people in their homes and to the residents at New Vista and Nazareth Homes. On becoming unwell she wanted to be nursed at St John’s Hill Health Care where she knew the nurses from the time she worked there in the formerly named Aubert Home of Compassion. Sister Helena was grateful for the love and nursing care she received from the nurses, and was happy in the knowledge that the spirit and mission of Suzanne Aubert and the early sisters continues.
This year, 2018, sister quietly celebrated her diamond jubilee. She was grateful for all the good things she enjoyed. Her life was well lived in the love and service of God and others. Sister died peacefully on 2 Dec 2018. May she rest in peace
