While living in Rome during 1913-1919, Suzanne Aubert initially lived with the Sisters of Sion. They had to ask her to vacate her room when their own Sisters started arriving in Rome from war zone areas.

Two postage stamps commemorating Home of Compassion’s centenary were released this week. The 50c and $1.50 stamps honour 100 years of the work of the Home of Compassion and its founder Suzanne Aubert, who established the home in 1907 to care for orphaned children or those who were severely disabled.

One hundred years ago, Suzanne Aubert had to get a reservoir built on the hillside beyond the Home of Compassion, where there was a spring, because the town water supply only came as far as Beramphore.

The restoration and conservation work on 100-year-old Gothic style St Joseph’s Church and old convent at Jerusalem is now finished.

At the end of September Sisters Margaret Anne Mills and Josephine Gorman, travelled to Rome to meet with people from the Congregation of Saints to help promote the cause for beatification of the Servant of God Suzanne Aubert.

Since she was 12, the Home of Compassion in Suva has been her home. I caught up with Agnes at the home last Friday while she was enjoying a cup of Milo and a pie.

For someone so old, it amazes me how much she can still remember, like her birthday. Without thinking she said, “I’m 85, I will be 86 on December 29. I was born in 1921.”
